STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
Student engagement goes beyond grabbing the interests of the student. It is not only enticing them with curriculum that is fun, entertaining, and inline with their interests. It is also about making the conscious efforts to ensure that what the student learns resembles and speaks to the identity of that student. It meets their needs, and acknowledges their unique abilities and challenges. It recognizes the efforts that are put forth, and acknowledges them with both qualifying statements and guidance to go further.
In all three courses in the Masters program where I felt that I gained a wealth of knowledge in student engagement, I accomplished what was mentioned in the previous paragraph. In Learning Tools, I gained the understanding that though technology and Web Based Learning Tools (WBLT) affords us the abilities to take learning to a new level, there is still a rationale and method to keep the learning relevant and engaging to the students. In Research Methods in Education, I delved into the benefits of commercial (non-educational) video games, and looked at their potential to support student learning in literary comprehension. A world specific to 21st century youths, I made an attempt to, as digital literacy advocates, bring the realities and interests of the student's world into the classroom. The pay-offs hopefully sponsor student engagement and critical thinking (digital literacy). Finally, in Social Context of Education, I saw the emotional, deeper rooted level of what student engagement is. It is the acknowledgement that different and unique is great, and in education, one must protect and emancipate children from external discrimination such as racism, homophobia, ableism, sexism, and bias stereotyping is paramount in.
I take on these matters through the lens of both an educator and leader. However, my heart feels that I will have the most leverage to implement change only when I ascend to the level of a leader.
